Remembering My Friend and Mentor “Ro”: A Tribute to Rosemary Ellen Guiley (1950–2019)

Image
This first appeared on the New Mystics website in 2019. It has since been updated. Of all the losses we are destined to suffer in the course of a lifetime, I find the loss of a mentor to be one of the hardest.  It was 16 years ago this November that I first met Rosemary (whom I affectionately came to call Ro a few years into our multilayered relationship). A few months before, during a trip to Point Pleasant, WV to see the Mothman Museum with Tonya, in August 2009, we were driving back from the McClintic Wildlife Refuge (the TNT Area in local parlance) when we saw an interdimensional being. Word quickly spread and Ro was one of a handful of investigators who met with us to recreate the circumstances of our experience and visit the site where the interdimensional appeared and disappeared. That weekend was the start of a friendship, a mentorship, and eventually a relationship as our publisher. I also had the honor of reviewing many of Ro's books for my review site and other platforms...

No One Hears Unless You Scream: A Play About Teen Suicide

Image
Commissioned by Seven Story Theatre Company in 2010 This play was made possible by a grant from the Monmouth County Arts Council and several private donors. This play has had productions or readings in New Jersey, Connecticut, Ireland, Kentucky, and Colorado. Author’s Note The writing of this play would not have been possible without the trust and honesty of the members of Seven Stories (formerly New Mystics) Theatre Company, whose willingness to talk about teen suicide and put themselves in the place of their peers who cannot stand up and speak for themselves is awe-inspiring and deeply humbling. You will never know whose life you may have saved by giving so much of yourselves. Production Note The stage is empty except for several boxes of different sizes, placed around the stage haphazardly. Some are stacked, others solitary.              ...

My Work as a Chautauqua Scholar and Historical Education Performer

Image
What Is Chautauqua? Chautauqua (named for Lake Chautauqua, where this historical education format was first started in 1874) is a unique way to present historical characters. A Chautauqua scholar typically spends 18 months to 2 years preparing a historical character. This includes research (first-hand documents if possible, scholarly research, site visits, interviews, etc.) They then write a 35- to 50-minute monologue (each hiring organization is different) to be presented to an audience. There is some debate about whether this is a lecture in costume or a theatrical performance, with most scholars somewhere in the middle. I prefer to treat it as a theatrical performance, looking as much like the character as possible, using an accent or otherwise changing my voice, and writing the monologue with a broad spectrum of experiences that allow for a variety of emotions.  After the monologue, there are two Q and A sessions, lasting 10 to 20 minutes each. One as the character and o...
